THE KNOW CONTEMPORARY is pleased to present Less Is More, an all-new solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based, contemporary artist Knowledge Bennett.
A survey consisting of only five works, four of which are Bennett’s largest creations to date. The show features mural-sized, geometrically shaped canvases fashioned in what has become Bennett’s signature surface aesthetic. The artist returns to the all-black diamond dust enveloped works on canvas, yet this time such surfaces are interrupted by lines that form two-dimensional geometric shapes. For Bennett, each canvas, differing in form (Square, Circle, Triangle, and Rectangle), serves as objects of symbolism.
“Since a child, I’ve associated shapes with the human family. A Square for the strength of Man, a Circle for the versatility of Woman, and a Triangle for acuteness of a Child. Rectangles often felt like the expansion of the village (extended family).”
Using foundational geometric shapes, Bennett continues his conversation in spirituality while acknowledging its relationship to mathematics. He sees these objects as inward portraits of Man, Woman, and Child. He continues to encourage the viewer to go within, further familiarizing themselves with what lies beneath the carefully curated, societal shaped, external facade.
Less Is More will open with a public reception on September 11, 2021, from 7-9 pm. The show runs through October 24. The KNOW Contemporary is located at 422 S. Alameda Street Los Angeles, CA. (Entrance around back on Seaton Street).
